VIENNA, June 16 (KUNA) - The Arab Group in Vienna issued its first official statement condemning the Israeli occupation's attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, describing the actions as a grave and unacceptable violation of international law and the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The statement was delivered by Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the IAEA, Ambassador Talal Al-Fassam during an emergency session of the IAEA Board of Governors convened by Russia.
The Arab Group warned that such attacks set a dangerous precedent, threaten regional stability, and breach international commitments to protect peaceful nuclear sites.
The group referenced past IAEA General Conference resolutions-particularly GC(29)/RES/444 (1985) and GC(34)/RES/533 (1990)-which condemn any attacks or threats against nuclear installations.
Expressing deep concern over potential radioactive fallout and broader consequences, the group called for restraint, respect for international law, and multilateral engagement.
Ambassador Al-Fassam also emphasized the importance of full adherence to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and urged serious efforts to implement the 1995 resolution on establishing a Middle East free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.
The Arab Group reaffirmed its rejection of foreign interference in Arab affairs, particularly actions endangering the safety of nuclear facilities, and concluded by calling on the IAEA Board of Governors to take responsibility in addressing the escalating crisis. (end)
