NEW DELHI, May 3 (KUNA) -- At least six people were killed and 30 others were injured following a stampede that broke out during a temple festival in North Goa in Goa state, Indian police said on Saturday.
The Press Trust of India said quoting local police sources that following a stampede at Sree Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao village of North Goa early morning on Saturday resulted in the killing of six people and injuing of 30 others.
When the stampede occurred, thousands of devotees from Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka had gathered at the temple for the festival and exact cause of the stampede is still not known.
State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said at least 30 people sustained injuries and eight are in critical condition.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and state Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed condolences over the loss of life and prayed for the early recovery of the injured. (end)
