WASHINGTON, March 24 (KUNA) -- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called a snap election for April 28, amid a trade war and economic tension with US President Donald Trump's new administration.
Carney told reporters that the Governor General, the personal representative of King Charles, Mary Simon approved his request to dissolve the Parliament and have an election.
He explained that Trump, "Wants to break us so America can own us. We will not let that happen." He followed it by asking Canadians for a "strong mandate" to confront President Trump.
He added, "We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump's unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty," he continued, "Our response must be to build a strong economy and a more secure Canada." Canada's Liberal Party selected Mark Carney just 10 days ago to succeed resigned Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, but he has never previously run in a national election.
Carney, who advocates closer cooperation with Europe and less reliance on the US, is scheduled to run against Conservative Party candidate Pierre Poilievre in the upcoming election.
US President imposed 25 percent tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, and threatened reciprocal tariffs on additional Canadian products on April 2. (end) amm.res
