GENEVA, March 6 (KUNA) -- Kuwait's Permanent Mission in Geneva affirmed on Thursday that Kuwait has made achievements of pioneering milestones in combating AIDS, according to the United Nations reports.
Kuwait was ranked first among Middle Eastern and North African countries in achieving the 90 targets and steadily progressing towards the 95 targets, Kuwait's Diplomatic Attachأ© Sarah Salah Al-Hasawi said in a plenary meeting at the Human Rights Council on combating HIV/AIDS.
Al-Hasawi noted that these achievements were made, thanks to expanding free and confidential voluntary testing and providing pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylactic treatments in the country.
She emphasized that Kuwait has recruited people living with HIV in positions that pose no risk to them or others ensuring their social integration.
She further affirmed that Kuwait has adopted mandatory pre-marital medical screening in line with its commitment to health protection and continues to implement extensive awareness campaigns in schools and universities to combat stigma and encourage individuals to get tested without fear thereby enhancing effective prevention measures.
At the international level, Al-Hasawi stated that Kuwait has supported the Global Fund to Fight AIDS for over 20 years, contributing 27 million dollars to promote equitable access to treatment and advance the shared goal of eradicating AIDS by 2030.
She reiterated Kuwait's firm belief that the right to health is a fundamental human right and that combating HIV/AIDS requires non-discrimination the preservation of dignity the protection of the privacy of those affected and efforts to ensure a comprehensive global response. (end)
