CAIRO, Feb 17 (KUNA) -- Assistant Secretary General of the Arab League Hussam Zaki announced late Sunday that the emergency Arab Summit, scheduled on February 27, might possibly be postponed due to logistic reasons and prior commitments of several Arab leaders.
Speaking to the press, Zaki affirmed that the postponement was purely for logistical reasons, affirming that the grand event was meant to draw a unified stance on the Palestinian cause especially with the US administration and Israeli occupation threats to forcibly displace Palestinians from their lands.
He indicated that the Egyptian proposal to rebuild the Gaza Strip via the efforts of the Palestinian people was the main focus of the proposed emergency summit without any intention to displace Palestinians.
In regards to the five-party Arab summit in Riyadh gathering Egypt, Jordan, Saudi, the UAE, and Qatar prior to the emergency, Zaki revealed that members continued to coordinate since the war on Gaza began via meetings the foreign ministers level and other related agencies.
He indicated that the Arab League was not invited to attend any of the meetings of the five-party summit, but it was informed on serious developments.
Zaki said that Palestine might be invited to the five-party summit to agree on a general frame of Arab stance on this important issue.
On the Arab stance regarding US President Donald Trump plans for the Gaza Strip, he affirmed that when official talks with the US begins on the issue, the Arab countries would base such talks on respecting the willing and desires of the Palestinian people.
Zaki wondered if the US was bluffing when it expressed intentions to clear Gaza from the Palestinian people or was it a tactic to reopen negotiations on the future of the Strip.
He affirmed that Palestinians in the Gaza Strip refused any attempts to forcibly evict them from their lands, saying that the only right solution was to give Palestinians the power to govern themselves until a comprehensive plan for peace was established.
The financial suffocation practiced by the Israeli occupation against Palestinians made it almost impossible to pursue basic security and order in Palestine, said Zaki.
He also criticized the Israeli occupation for imposing restrictions on humanitarian aid entering the Gaza Strip, saying that it was inhumane and illegal.
He also blasted the occupation for stalling the implementation of the Gaza Strip ceasefire deal, expressing doubts that the Israeli occupation was eager to move forward, which might bring the whole deal to a screeching halt and bring back the violent war against Gazans. (end)
