UN: glimmer of hope for fair solutions to the World's largest displacement crisis

GENEVA, Dec 9 (Kuna) -- The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi stated Monday that recent developments provide a glimmer of hope that the suffering endured by the Syrian people for 14 years may come to an end and that the world's largest forced displacement crisis could move toward fair and just solutions.
In a statement issued from Geneva Grandi stressed that Syria is at a critical crossroads between peace and war stability and lawlessness and reconstruction or further ruin.
He underlined the unique opportunity for Syria to pursue peace and for its displaced people to begin to return home stressing that millions of refugees remain cautious and hesitant about their safety and the uncertain conditions they may face.
Grandi stressed the importance of focusing on the issue of returns noting that patience and vigilance are key.
He expressed hope that conditions on the ground would evolve positively paving the way for voluntary safe and sustainable returns. He underlined the necessity of ensuring that refugees can make informed decisions about their future.
He pointed out that the prioritization of law and order by all parties in Syria will play a decisive role in the return process saying, "a transition that respects the rights lives and aspirations of all Syrians regardless of ethnicity religion or political beliefs is essential for creating a sense of safety and stability." He also called attention to the immense humanitarian needs within Syria where over 90 percent of the population relies on aid amidst destroyed infrastructure stressing the urgency of delivering assistance and aid as winter approaches.
Grandi appealed to donors to ensure that UNHCR and its partners have adequate resources to respond swiftly and effectively. He also highlighted the need for sustained international support for neighboring countries hosting millions of refugees.
The High Commissioner reaffirmed UNHCR's readiness to support Syrians wherever they are and urged all parties to seize this moment as a turning point toward hope recovery and lasting peace and stability for the Syrian people. (end) imk.mb
