Argentina beats Canada by 2-0 in COPA America '24 opener

KUWAIT, June 21 (KUNA) -- Argentina defeated Canada by 2-0 goals in the opening match of the 48th COPA America 2024, which began in the US on Friday.
The match, held in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, saw Juilan Alvarez scoring for Argentina in the 49th minute of the match after a stupendous assist from team captain and star Lionel Messi.
Lautaro Martinez scored Argentina's second goal in the 88th minute of the match also via an assist from Messi.
Canada throughout the game did not pose much threat to Argentina, which earned the La Albiceleste (the White and Sky Blue) team the three points of the match and the top position in Group A.
Saturday will see another match from the same group pitting Chile against Peru in the tournament, which will last until July 14. (end) hms.gta
