9 killed, 33 injured as bus falls into gorge after militant attack in Jammu, Kashmir

NEW DELHI, June 9 (KUNA) -- At least nine Indians were killed and 33 others injured on Sunday as their bus fell into a deep gorge after being attacked by militants in Jammu and Kashmir, according to local reports.
The Press Trust of India reported that a bus carrying pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh fell into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district.
The 53-seater bus was on its route from Shiv Khori temple to Mata Vaishno Devi shrine at Katra near Teryath village when it was attacked, it said, adding that as the bus came under attack it veered off the road and fell into a deep gorge killing nine people and injuring 33 others.
"An unfortunate incident occurred and as per the initial reports, the terrorists had laid an ambush and opened fire on the bus which had left Shiv Khori for Katra. The driver lost balance and the vehicle fell into the gorge," Senior Superintendent of Police Mohita Sharma said.
New Delhi accuses Islamabad of supporting and funding the armed groups in Kashmir, claims which Islamabad denies. (end) atk.mt
