Spain: EUR 2.4 bln. to expand Madrid Int'l Airport capacity

MADRID, Jan 26 (KUNA) -- Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced Friday an expansion plan for Madrid International Airport (Adolfo Suarez-Madrid Barajas) to accommodate 90 million passengers by 2031.
Sanchez's announcement took place at the International Tourism Exhibition (FITUR 2024), noting the airport capacity will be expanded by 28 percent with a cost of EUR 2.4 billon (USD 2.61 billion).
Madrid International Airport generates 10 percent of the GPD of the Capital Territory, Sanchez pointed out, noting that the number will grow significantly after the expansion and increasing the number of flights with Latin America and the Far East.
Madrid International Airport is the largest in Spain, as in 2023 it recorded the largest passenger traffic (60.2 million); a growth of 18.9 percent compared to 2022, according to Aena; the country's airport operator. (end) hnd.dss
