UN chief renews confidence in Sudan special rep.

NEW YORK, June 1 (KUNA) -- UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres renewed his full confidence to the members of the council in Volker Perets, his special representative in Sudan.
In a press statement, Gutteres said: "In relation to the situation in Sudan, there are areas of responsibility of the Security Council and there are areas of responsibility of the Secretary-General." "In my area of responsibility, I reaffirmed to the Council my full confidence in Volker Perthes as Special Representative of the Secretary-General," he added.
Gutteres added that it is up to the Security Council to decide whether they support the continuation of the Mission for another period or whether it is time to end it.
Spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric said that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) says more than 1.2 million people have been displaced inside Sudan as a result of the conflict.
He also added that the World Food Programme (WFP) continued its distributions in Khartoum, reaching 15,000 people trapped in the Omdurman area with emergency food.
Across the country, WFP has now reached more than 782,000 people with food and nutrition support over the past four weeks, adding that the agency is also providing emergency telecommunications services to all of the UN system and the wider humanitarian community in Sudan. (end) asf.ahm
