France's Senate passes retirement age bill despite public outcry

PARIS, March 9 (KUNA) -- The French Senate voted on Thursday to raise retirement age from 62 to 64 despite public protests and labor unions' strikes.
Some 201 senators voted in favor of the bill while 115 voted against it.
"I am delighted that the debates made it possible to reach this vote. The review of the text will continue. It will make it possible to examine proposals from all the benches for a balanced and fair reform," French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne tweeted Thursday on her Twitter account.
Debates on the matter will continue to finalize the legislation of the entire bill to overhaul the country's pension by Sunday.
While the Senate was busy on the issue, labor unions tried to mobilize all their efforts to block French President Emmanuel Macron's bill by staging huge public protests and extendable strikes that include strategic and vital sectors in the country. (end) mao.sa
