Basra Gov.: Gulf Cup final in jeopardy after stampede incident

BAGHDAD, Jan 19 (KUNA) -- The 25th Gulf Cup final in Basra might be canceled or rescheduled in another country after the stampede incident, which occurred at the gates of Al-Basra international stadium, said Governor Asaad Al-Eidani on Thursday.
The final was supposed to bit Iraq against Oman.
In a press release, Al-Eidani expressed sorrow over the tragic event that caused several casualties.
He indicated that the Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation (AGCFF) might be forced to cancel the match if another similar incident occurred.
According to the Iraq News Agency (INA), at least one fan died and 60 others injured due to a stampede.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mohammad Al-Sudani called on fans to work together to avoid further mishaps.
In a statement on Twitter, Al-Sudani said that Basra residents have done a tremendous job in organizing the tournament and it was important to continue efforts to make the event a success. (pickup previous) ahh.gta
