Railway workers in Austria start 24-hour strike

VIENNA, Nov 28 (KUNA) -- Nearly 50,000 railway workers in Austria are holding a one-day "warning strike" across the country on Monday, after they failed to reach an agreement to increase wages.
In a statement to the Austrian Broadcasting Network, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the State Main Railway Company Andreas Matta said that the company suggested an increase in workers' salaries by more than eight percent, while the trade Union asked for a higher increase that reaches 11 percent.
National, regional and international train services are to be suspended for one day across the country due to strikes, he added.
Matta expressed his apologies to passengers due to the suspension of the railway services, in the capital Vienna, and surrounding areas, pledging to work to restore train services as soon as possible.
On his part, Vice Chairman of the Railway Company at the Trade Union said that responsibility for this warning strike and its negative consequences on passengers and economic damage, lays with the Chamber of Commerce, which he accused of not negotiating seriously.
The railway unions and the Board of Directors of the Public Railways Company are expected to meet again on Tuesday, in an effort to end this strike. (end) amq.nhq
