India PM calls for more efforts to combat organized crime

NEW DELHI, Oct 18 (KUNA) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed on Tuesday to strengthen global efforts to the "many harmful globalised threats" facing the world, notably terrorism, corruption, drug trafficking, poaching and organised crime. In an inaugural speech to the 90th General Assembly of the Interpol in New Delhi, he said, "The pace of change of these dangers is faster than earlier. When threats are global, the response cannot be just local. It is high time that the world comes together to defeat these threats," Modi said.
He noted that his country has been combating trans-national terrorism for several decades and thousands of people made the ultimate sacrifice in this struggle. He urged to augment the fight against terrorism to cyber world. "It is no longer enough that terrorism is fought only in the physical space. It is now spreading its presence through online radicalization and cyber threats. At the click of a button, an attack can be executed or systems can be brought to their knees," Indian PM said. He also appealed to develop global strategies.
"There is a need to further develop international strategies. Establishment of early detection and warning systems, protecting transportation services, security for communication infrastructure, security for critical infrastructure, technical and technological assistance, intelligence exchange, many of these things need to be taken to a new level," he went on. Modi also urged to strengthen international cooperation in diverse fields in order to achieve local welfare saying that more countries are becoming increasingly inward-looking.
"Thousands of Indians fought and died in the world wars. From climate targets to COVID vaccines, India has shown willingness to take the lead in any kind of crisis. "And now, at a time when nations and societies are becoming inward-looking, India calls for more, not less, international cooperation," he said.
The Indian PM also urged the Interpol to expedite issuing Red Corner Notices against fugitive offenders so as to held demolish safe haves for the terrorists, corrupt and criminals in the earliest. In the 90th General Assembly of the Interpol, being hosted by New Delhi on October 18-21, several high level ministers, security and police officials from several of the 195 member countries are participating to take stock of the past activities and deliberate upon the future course of action.
