KUWAIT, Oct 18 (KUNA) -- Speaker of the National Assembly Ahmad Al-Sadoun announced on Tuesday electing MP Mohammad Al-Mutair as Deputy Speaker for the 17th legislative term.
Naming Al-Mutair came during the first ordinary session of the parliament 17th legislative term, gaining 25 votes against his contender MP Hassan Johar who garnered 20 votes during the second round of voting, considering both of them as the top two MPs gaining votes during the first round, with total attendance of 48 MPs.
The first round of voting resulted in 22 votes for Al-Mutair, 17 for Johar, while MP Essa Al-Kandari gained only six votes of the total 48 MPs, which required re-electing as none of the candidates obtained an absolute majority (25 votes), based on Articles (92) of the Kuwaiti Constitution and (28) of the National Assembly's bylaws.
The first session of the Parliament is chaired by the eldest MP.
MP Al-Mutair, born in 1969, has a BA in business management. He served as MP during legislative terms (the 10th in 2002, the 11th in 2006, the 12th in 2008, the 15th in 2016 and 16th in 2020).
