EU takes Malta to court over "golden passports" scheme

BRUSSELS, Sept 29 (KUNA) -- The European Commission Thursday said that it has decided to refer Malta to the Court of Justice of the European Union for its investor citizenship scheme, also referred to as the "golden passports".
Following Russia's war against Ukraine, Malta suspended this new scheme for Russian and Belarusian nationals.
While this was a positive step, Malta continues to operate the scheme for all other nationalities and has not expressed any intention to end it, said the EUآ’s executive body in a statement.
The Commission explained that the scheme breaks EU rules because it does not require beneficiaries to live in Malta. (end) nk
