Iraq protestors storm Baghdad Green Zone over political "quota system"

BAGHDAD, July 27 (KUNA) -- Hundreds of Iraqi protestors stormed Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone on Wednesday, urging the country's political leaders to put aside a sectarian "quota system" in efforts to form a new government.
The protestors have assembled in the Green Zone, where government buildings and diplomatic missions are located, to oppose the bid for primie minister of Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, an Iran-backed candidate, local media reported.
Prime Minister Mustafa Al- Kadhimi has called on the protesters to "immediately withdraw" from the Green Zone, instructing security forces to do everything in their power to "prevent any harm to security and order".
The protestors are proponents of prominent Muslim cleric Muqtada Al-Sadr, whose bloc won most seats in parliament in an October 2021 election. (end) ahh.nam
