Droupadi Murmu swears in as India's 15th President

New Delhi, July 25 (KUNA) -- Droupadi Murmu was sworn-in as 15th President of India, Monday, as Chief Justice of India N. V. Ramana administered oath at the Central Hall of Parliament.
The President's Secretariat said in a statement that Murmu thanked the Parliamentarians and political leaders for supporting her, and pledged that she will work towards uplifting deprived sections of the society.
The 64-year-old former teacher also promised to work for youth and women of the country, "Today, I assure all fellow citizens especially youth of India and the women of India that their interests will be paramount for me while working in this position," the President affirmed.
The newly elected President commented, "It is a matter of great satisfaction for me that those who have been deprived for centuries and those who have been denied the benefits of development, those poor, downtrodden, backwards and tribal are seeing their reflection in me," she said.
Paying tribute to the freedom fighters and their aspirations, she urged to work "at a fast pace to fulfil the expectations of freedom fighters from the citizens of independent India." She also urged for collective efforts to fulfil the new development journey and commended the commitment of armed forces and the health workers who fought against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind and other political leaders congratulated Murmu on her position.
Murmu, who has been nominated by the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the post of president, got 64 percent of the vote of MPs of two Houses of the Parliament and members of Legislative Assembly in states. (end) atk.aai
