Austria counters gas shortage via underground facilities in Haidach

VIENNA, July 25 (KUNA) -- The Austrian government intends to benefit from underground natural gas storage in Haidach, near the German state of Bavaria, to face any gas shortage coming winter.
Federal Minister for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology of Austria, Leonore Gewessler said, on Monday, that they decided that all gas storage facilities in Austria would be connected to the local network, according to the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF).
She added that Haidach gas storage, which is considered the largest underground storage in Europe, is connected to the German gas network only and supplies gas to houses and facilities in Bavaria.
She also noted that the first connection with the local gas network would take place later this year, adding that the gas storage is considered a central safety barrier during winter in Austria.
Gewessler revealed that Hiadrach underground storage is currently filled with 50 percent of gas. (end) amg.ahm
