ADEN, June 30 (KUNA) -- The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia approved a fast-track plan to pump USD 3.3-billion from Saudi Arabia and the UAE into economic, service and humanitarian projects in Yemen.
The urgent funding will be channeled to 17 projects in the areas of energy, transport, education, water, health and rebuilding of the state institutions, Yemen News Agency (SABA) reported on Thursday, citing a statement by the Yemeni presidential office.
The announcement followed a meeting between Chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) Rashad al-Alimi, in his residence in Riyadh, and Saudi Deputy Minister of Defense Prince Khaled bin Salman bin Abdulaziz.
Prince Khaled bin Salman told Al-Alimi that the plan was endorsed at the behest of King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.
He renewed the Kingdom's commitment to offering all necessary support for the Yemeni people and government until they restore the state institutions, security, stability and development.
The two sides agreed on a framework plan for the urgent support through the Saudi Program for Development and Reconstruction in Yemen (SPDRY), starting with a package of projects with total cost USD 400 million in addition to USD 200 million to provide the government-run power generating stations with fuel.
The meeting, attended by PLC's members Sultan al-Erradah, Abdullah al-Alim and Othman Mujalli, reviewed the latest developments of the situation in Yemen.
President Al-Alimi spoke highly of the tireless efforts of the Saudi Deputy Minister of Defense and the Saudi institutions, including the SPDRY and King Salman Humanitarian and Relief Center (KSRelief), in supporting Yemen and alleviating the suffering of the people. (end)
