US approves nearly USD 55 mln in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan - Blinken

WASHINGTON, June 28 (KUNA) -- The US will provide nearly USD 55 million in immediate aid to Afghanistan in the wake of an earthquake that rattled its southeastern region, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday.
The additional disaster relief assistance will reach people affected by the earthquake with critical relief items, including shelter materials and cooking pots, in the aftermath of this natural disaster, Blinken said in a statement.
This bring total US aid provided to Afghanistan since last year to more than USD 774 million, he added, underlining Washington's "enduring commitment" to the people of Afghanistan.
On June 22, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck a remote region of Afghanistan some 160 km (100 miles) southeast of the capital Kabul, killing at least 1,000 people, according to disaster management officials. (end) asj.nam
