Russian Pres. praises BRICS group status, influence globally

MOSCOW, June 23 (KUNA) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that the status of the "BRICS" group is constantly being strengthened and its influence is steadily expanding globally.
In a speech before the BRICS virtually summit, Putin added that the BRICS group possesses a huge economic, political, scientific, technological and human resource and possesses all capabilities for effective work aimed at ensuring stability, international security, growth and prosperity and advancing the tasks of improving people's lives.
Russia has always called for the necessity of collective action to address conflicts, confront terrorism and organized crime, Putin added.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced earlier that many countries had expressed their desire to join the "BRICS" group, including Argentina, Bangladesh, Egypt, Uruguay, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Nigeria and Thailand.
BRICS group, which currently includes Russia, China, India, South Africa and Brazil, was formed in 2006 with the aim of developing mechanisms for comprehensive cooperation among member states. (end) as.aa
