Iran pres. urges closer economic coop. with Russia

TEHRAN, June 23 (KUNA) -- Iranian President Ebrahim Rais on Thursday said it is necessary for his country to promote economic cooperation with Russia, while commending continued meetings and talks between both sides.
He was quoted by Iranian state TV as saying while meeting visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that continued talks between Iranian and Russian officials are proof of mutual willingness to usher in a fresh stage of fruitful strategic economic cooperation between both countries.
The Iranian president considered that cooperation and collaboration between Tehran and Moscow is an "effective solution" to address US unilateral economic sanctions.
Rais reiterated the significance of putting an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine as soon as possible, voicing Tehran's readiness to help in reaching a diplomatic solution in this regard.
For his part, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said his country is willing to broaden the scope of cooperation with Iran in all domains, including the economic one.
He underlined the significance of Iran's membership of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), reaffirming his country's support for a strong Iranian role in regional and international organizations. (end) mw.mt
