UN envoy underscores strategic importance of Yemen's Hudaydah port

NEW YORK, June 15 (KUNA) -- Head of the United Nations Mission to Support the Hudaydah Agreement (UNMHA) Gen. Michael Beary said the Hudaydah seaport, west Yemen, is unrivalled in terms of location and infrastructure.
The seaport is a lifeline for Yemenis providing them with 70 percent of the external humanitarian assistance, Gen Beary, the Chair of the Redeployment Coordination Committee (RCC), said at a presser in the UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday.
He voiced hope that the port will remain open to allow stable and unhindered flow of aid supplies for the Yemenis and help revive the economy.
The redeployment of government troops from large swaths of Hudaydah governorate resulted in diverting the aid supplies to the southern areas.
Nevertheless, the UNMHA was able to continue its activities in the three ports of Hudaydah, Saleef and Ras Isa, he added.
Following the Stockholm Agreement, reached in Sweden in December 2018, between the Government of Yemen and the Houthis under the auspices of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen Martin Griffiths, the Security Council in its resolution 2451 (2018) authorized the establishment and deployment, for an initial period of 30 days, of an advance team to begin monitoring and to support the immediate implementation of the ceasefire and redeployment of forces from the city of Hudaydah and the ports of Hudaydah, Saleef and Ras Isa.
