UN envoy to Yemen announces truce extending for two months

ADEN, June 2 (KUNA) -- United Nations envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, announced Thursday extending the Yemeni truce for two more months, following the consent of both sides.
In a statement, Grundberg detailed that the new treaty begins where the current ends, tonight at 7 pm Yemen time, carrying the same stipulations.
He indicated that the people of Yemen reaped the benefits of the original treaty, signed two months ago, a number of civilian victims decreased notably more oil was pumped into the country through Hodeida port, and commercial flights to and from Sana'a International Airport resumed after 6-year hiatus.
The concerned parties met face to face under the sponsorship of the UN for the first time in years to make progress towards opening up roadways, and applying mechanisms to deescalate the military situation across the country, Grundberg added.
He commended the two sides for taking such measures, considering it a turning point in the Yemeni crisis, and further asserted the need for more steps so that the treaty would reach its full potential.
Additionally, he expressed gratitude to the International Community, especially Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Security Council members for their support, as well as Egypt and Jordan for resuming commercial flights to Sana'a airport. (end) sns.aai
