Floods, landslides in NE India claim 11 lives

NEW DELHI, May 17 (KUNA) -- At least 11 people died and many others were reported as missing on Tuesday due to floods and landslides in the two north east Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
The Hindu newspaper reported, quoting official sources, that five people were killed and several others were injured in Arunachal Pradesh following landslides and floods caused by torrential rains in two areas of state capital Itanagar since the night of May 15.
The National Disaster Response Force, Arunachal Pradesh Disaster Response Force and other rescue teams are engaged in rescue operations and saved six people as incessant rains and foggy condition have made the operation tough.
Authorities have urged people to take precautionary measures -- especially those who are living along the banks of rivers and streams and landslip-prone areas. Heavy rains and subsequent floodwaters claimed six lives in the state of Assam. Cachar, Lakhimpur and Dima Hasao were the worst hit districts and all the deaths were reported from there.
According to an official announcement from Assam authorities, more than 200,000 people in 20 districts were affected by the floods and landslides. Roads, railway services, electricity and water supply were hit by the torrential rains in the last three days. (end) atk.bb
