Kuwait pledges USD 10 mln in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan

KUWAIT, April 1 (KUNA) -- The State of Kuwait has pledged USD 10 million in fresh humanitarian assistance to international agencies working in Afghanistan in order to alleviate the sufferings of Afghan people.
The pledge, which came at the behest of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, was announced by Kuwaiti Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Majdy Al-Dhafiri on Thursday during a high-level meeting on the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, co-chaired by the UN, Germany, Qatar and the UK.
Leading Kuwait's participating delegation, Al-Dhafiri addressed the gathering on the hard humanitarian conditions of the Afghan people, elaborating that Kuwait had provided humanitarian aid to Afghanistan in order to ease out the anguish and sufferings of its people, and even helped in facilitating the evacuation of citizens from Afghanistan and other friendly countries.
The Kuwaiti official reiterated that the State of Kuwait would continue backing international efforts in this regard.
He appreciated UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Germany, Qatar and the UK for their efforts in co-chairing this international meeting.
Assistant Foreign Minister for the Deputy Foreign Minister's Office Affairs Ambassador Ayham Al-Omar and Acting Assistant Foreign Minister for International Organizations' Affairs Abdulaziz Al-Jarallah attended the international meeting. (end) mt
