UK offers USD 130 mln to aid Afghan people

LONDON, Jan 28 (KUNA) -- The British government announced on Friday that it would be donating 97 million Pound Sterling (around USD 130 million) to help aid the people of Afghanistan.
Elizabeth Truss -- Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs -- said in a press release that the donation would help provide food, water, and healthcare to some 2.7 million Afghan in dire humanitarian conditions.
The delivery of the donations would be handled by the UN humanitarian fund for the Afghan people, the world food program, and other entities, indicated Truss, stressing that no funds would end up in the hands of the Taliban.
Truss pointed out that the total UK humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan since withdrawal from the country last August reached 286 million Pound Sterling (around USD 383 million) given to some 4.5 million Afghans. (end) mrn.gta
