Eight dead, 50 injured in stampede prior to AFCON match

TUNIS, Jan 25 (KUNA) -- Cameroonian Ministry of Health declared, Tuesday, that stampede in front of football stadium in capital Yaonde caused the death of eight people and the injury of 50 others. The stampede took place prior to match between Cameron and Comoros Islands last night as part of Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ministry of Health stated that a large mass of Cameroonian supporters attempted to enter the Olembe stadium and attend the game, which ended to the advantage of host country by two to one goals, as reported by Cameroonian press.
The ministry indicated that those injured were promptly transported to city hospital via ambulances.
The Cameroonian win of last night qualifies the host nation to quarter finals of AFCON. (end) nmo.aai
