India imposes restrictions, 1,050 total Omicron cases, 337,704 COVID-19 infections

NEW DELHI, Jan 22 (KUNA) -- Indian authorities imposed more restrictions in several states as COVID-19 cases have once again rose to record levels amid total Omicron variant cases went up to 1,050.
Data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare showed on Saturday that 337,704 fresh COVID-19 cases and 488 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, while total Omicron cases in the country stood at 1,050.
Total deaths due to coronavirus in the country touched 488,884 cases while the cumulative pandemic cases rose to 38,903,731.
A total of 36,301,482 affected people have recovered so far as the nation struggled to face the third wave of the pandemic.
Maharashtra (7,420,027), Kerala (5,552,512), Karnataka (3,425,002), Tamil Nadu (3,072,666), and Andhra Pradesh (2,153,268) are considered the worst affected Indian states.
Several states including the capital New Delhi and Kerala imposed curfew like restrictions, closing down schools and educational institutions, along with restricted political and religious meetings in a bid to control the spread of COVID-19.
However, the central government has asked state governments to avoid complete lockdown and ensure that economic activities and livelihood of the people are not affected. (end) atk.lr
