Major events of 2021 in Syria

KUWAIT, Dec 28 (KUNA) -- Here are the main events in the Arab world throughout 2021, we continue with Syria.
SYRIA:

Feb 15: Syrian News Agency (SANA) says the Syrian air defenses have repelled Israeli missiles targeting areas surroundings Damascus, Golan Heights, Al-Jalil, and downed most of them.
Feb 17: World Food Program (WFP) warns that 12.4 million people in Syria, or nearly 60 percent of population, lacked food security caused by conflict and economic decline due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Feb 25: US Defense Department says its forces raided the infrastructure used by armed groups supported by Iran in Eastern Syria.
March 8: The Syrian Presidency announces the infection of President Bashar Al-Assad and his wife Asmaa with the Coronavirus.
March 17: SANA reports Israeli missiles targeting areas surrounding Damascus, and the Syrian air defense confronted the missiles and shot them down.
March 30: The fifth edition of the Brussels Conference on 'Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region pledges USD 6.4 billion to alleviate humanitarian suffering of the Syrian people caused by the decade-long conflict.
April 19: A Russian official said that Russian planes damaged a secret base for opposition militants, and killed 200 of them in the suburbs of Tadmur, Syria.
April 22: Israel announced striking military bases close to Damascus, in response to launching anti-aircraft missile from the Syrian territories towards Negev Dessert.
May 5: Syria announced the death of a civilian, while injuring other six following an Israeli airstrike on various locations in countryside of coastal city of latakia.
May 27: Speaker of the Syrian Peoples' Council Hammouda Sabbagh announced victory of President Bashar Al-Assad in presidential elections, by winning 95.2 percent of the total votes that took place on the previous day.
 June 3: United Nations Under-Secretary-General of Disarmament Affairs, Izumi Nakamitsu said that the Syrian government did not offer any information that would allow OPCW to close the case of finding of chemical substances in one of the facilities affiliated to the Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Centre (SSRC).
 June 13: Up to 19 Syrian civilians were killed, tens injured following an attack targeting a private hospital in Afrin city, northern Syria.
June 23: UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres stressed on the importance of an appeal for USD 4.2 billion, to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people.
June 25: The World Food Programme (WFP) said that levels of food security levels in Syrian are the worst since the outbreak if the crisis in the country. 12.4 million Syrians are suffering from suffer from absence of food security, which makes 60 percent of the total population.
July 7: The 16 Astana round of talks kicks off in Khuzestan capital, amid tense political and diplomatic row over opening a humanitarian crossing.
July 9: Security Council unanimously agree to extend mechanism to deliver humanitarian aid through borders in North West of Syria.
July 19: The Syrian government claim their air defense confronted an Israeli aggression in Al-Sefeira area in Aleppo, and destroyed several rockets.
July 22: UN Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen calls on political parties involved to return to negotiations and implement UN resolution 2254.
July 28: US Treasury imposes sanctions to eight Syrian state prisons, five senior security officials, along with an armed Syrian group and two of its leaders.
July 31: UN Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen expresses concern over violence southwest of Syria, calling on all for "calm." July 31: Jordan shutdown "Jaber" border crossing with Syria temporarily due security unrest in the Syrian side.
August 5: Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) sign a grant with the UNICIF to support children with Cancer in Syria, totaling USD 2.7 million.
August 19: Syria News Agency (SANA) said Israel fired rockets and targeted Damascus and Homs suburban areas.
Sept 14: UN Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen meets Syrian opposition in Turkish Istanbul city after visiting the Syrian capital Damascus.
Sept 27: Jordan reopens "Jaber" border crossing with Syria after lockdown due to security unrest in the Syrian side.
Oct 8: Syria news agency (SANA) said air defense forces responded to an Israeli air aggression on the T-4 military airport near Palmyra.
Oct 13: Syria news agency (SANA) says air defense forces responded to Israeli targets south of Tadmur city in the suburb of Homs province, which resulted in killing one Syrian soldier, three injured, in addition to some material damage.
Oct 20: Syria news agency (SANA) says 14 people were killed in a military convoy after two improvised bombs were detonated in the capital Damascus.
Oct 20: Syria news agency (SANA) said a US military base in Al-Tanf near Syria's borders with Jordan and Iraq came under a missile attack from unknown drones.
Oct 30: Syria news agency (SANA) says air defense forces confronted an Israeli aggression in the suburb of Damascus, which resulted in injuring two soldiers and little material damage.

Nov 8: Syria news agency (SANA) said Israeli occupation force raided targeted several areas in the central and coastal areas of the country, which resulted in injuring two soldiers, and some material damage.
Nov 9: UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayid visit and meet with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad in Damascus, and discuss ways of boosting economic relations.
Nov 17: Syria news agency (SANA) said two Israeli missiles targeted an area near the occupied Golan Heights, causing destruction to an empty building south of Damascus.
Nov 24: Syria news agency (SANA) said two Syrian civilians were killed and seven others, including six soldiers, wounded due to an Israeli airstrike on Central Syria.
Dec 2: Syrian News Agency (SANA) said 10 workers in oil fields were killed, and one injured after their convoy was attacked by the terrorist organization of so-called Islamic State (IS).
Dec 7: Israeli occupation targeted Lattakia Mediterranean Port's container yard with multiple missiles, which led to several containers catching fire, said Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Dec 16: Israel launched a missile attack on army posts in Syriaأ‚'s southern area, killing one soldier and causing material damage, reported Syrian News Agency (SANA).
Dec 22: The European Union announced that is has earmarked an additional 10 million Euro (USD 11.3 million) to help people in Syria, in which the funding will help people to access water and rehabilitate critical water infrastructure. (end) ed
