Today in Kuwait's history

KUWAIT, Dec 1 (KUNA) --

1949 -- Kuwait Department of Health purchased the first ambulance, A Ford which could carry more than one patient.
1958 -- Pan-Arab Al-Arabi Magazine published its first issue. The cultural monthly was published by the Ministry of Information and distributed around 300,000 copies in all Arab countries. Ahmad Zaki was Al-Arabi's first Chief Editor.
1959 -- Kuwait Supreme Council decided that any educational institute should obtain a license of the Department of Knowledge in order to operate.
1960 -- The Department of Health published the first issue of Tabeeb Al-Mujtama' (Society's physician), a monthly magazine containing medical articles and was sold with half a rupee.
1975 -- Kuwait acquired BP Kuwait and Gulf Kuwait companies with USD 50.5 million, in addition to interests calculated from March 5, 1975.
1986 -- Kuwaiti Association for Specialized Studies and Research was established with the objective of promoting research over social, political, economic and cultural issues within Kuwait society.
1995 -- The first issue of Qurtas Magazine was published. Qurtas was the first Kuwaiti weekly specialized in publication and books.
1999 -- National Telecommunication Company launched operations. The company, which was established on October 12, 1997, offered mobile and paging services.
2007 -- Kuwait Society of Engineers won the excellence award for power saving category, during a GCC Engineering Forum which was held in Muscat, Oman.
2007 -- Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) appointed Abbas Naqi, of Kuwait, as Secretary General for a three-year term.
2010 -- An international donor conference for East Sudan opened in Kuwait, featuring 39 countries, 28 international organiztions and 73 NGOs. Kuwait pledged USD 500 million to execute infrastructure projects and social services in eastern Sudan.
2011 -- Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) said it drilled 418 new wells during fiscal year 2010-11, exceeding the 225-well target.
2012 -- Kuwaiti voters head to polling stations in five constituencies to elect 50 MPs. This was the first election whereby every voter could only select on candidate instead of previously four.
2013 -- Kuwait's Yusuf Al-Abdulrazzaq won the world squabike championship, held in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
2014 -- Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) signed an agreement with Lebanon to finance development projects with USD 1.2 million.
2016 -- Sheikha Suad Al-Sabah won the Arab Woman Award for her role in promotion of Arab woman status and service of culture and Arabic Language.
2020 -- Kuwait University decided to conduct online classes for the first semester of academic year 2020-21 in a drive to curb spread of coronavirus. (end) bs
