Germany labels S. African "dangerous zone" due to mutated virus

BERLIN, Nov 26 (KUNA) -- The German Government on Friday declared the State of South Africa "a dangerous zone" after the African country's government disclosed discovery of a new mutated form of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
German Health Minister Jens Spahn said at a news conference that the classification prohibits travel to and from South Africa, effective the next night.
However, Berlin will only allow its citizens in South Africa to return home, minister Spanh said. He urged Germans who came back from the African country over the past days to subject themselves to medical screening.
Meanwhile, the medical institute Robert Koch said there was no sign of the new mutated form of the virus, (B.1.1.529), in Germany, yet.
South Africa earlier today declared registration of 22 new cases infected with the mutated virus. (end) anj.rk
