WASHINGTON, Aug 8 (KUNA) -- The US Senate confirmed Saturday evening Carlos Del Toro as Secretary of the Navy, becoming the second Hispanic secretary in the Navy's history.
In a statement on the confirmation, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said "Carlos Del Toro's lifelong pursuits and deep experience advancing America's national security make him well-prepared to serve as the 78th Secretary of the Navy."
"He understands firsthand the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing our Navy, from addressing the pacing challenge of China and modernizing our capabilities, to investing in our most valuable asset - our people," he added.
In his confirmation hearing, Del Toro said he is "going to be exclusively focused on the China threat and exclusively focused in moving our maritime strategy forward in order to protect Taiwan and all of our national security interests in the Indo-Pacific Theater." (end)
