British Diplomat: Iran "responsible" for attack on merchant vessel off Oman

NEW YORK, Aug 6 (KUNA) -- British Permanent Ambassador to UN, Barbara Woodward announced Friday that her country knows that Iran was responsible for the attack on (Mercer Street) oil tanker off Omani territorial waters last week.
"There is no justification for what happened. A sanctioned country tragically attacked a civilian ship that was passing peacefully through international waters. Two civilians, one Romanian and one British died because of Iran's disregard for international law," Woodward told reporters.
The global economy, food and goods depend on the safety of commercial shipping, and for this reason, the international laws protect freedom of navigation, she added.
She also stressed that respecting these laws is essential to maintaining international peace and security.
Earlier today, EU High Representative Josep Borrell and G7 Foreign Ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US Friday condemned the "unlawful attack" against merchant vessel off the coast of Oman on July 29. (end) asf.aa
