Austria beefs up border measures to stop illegal immigration

VIENNA, July 24 (KUNA) -- Austria has beefed up its borders with Hungary with additional 400 military personnel in a measure to stop illegal immigration.
Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer, speaking on Saturday at a joint news conference with the Austrian Minister of Defense, Klaudia Tanner, indicated that the government would increase cooperation with the army to stem illegal influx of illegal immigrants.
Up to 200 illegal immigration bids were foiled this year alone, he said.
Meanwhile, minister Tanner said her government dispatched a battalion of army troops to the borders for the same purpose.
Austria and other European countries have placed rigid constraints on the illegal immigration and have deported thousands who have sneaked into the countries by circumventing laws. (end) mah.rk
