KHARTOUM, July 12 (KUNA) -- Dozens of ancient mudbrick military fortifications dot bank of the Nile River in Omdurman, capital of the old Mahdist State (1885-1898).
The forts, built from local brick and stone as defenses to face British invaders, have been subject to the state relics protection law since 1952.
They were erected to protect Omdurman, in 1896, and resist invaders attacking by land or across the river.
Following the Kerreri Battle, in the morning of September 2, 1898, Much of "Al-Tawabi" defenses skirting the old capital were demolished.
Sudanese boast of the old defenses as national icons depicting sacrifices for the homeland. (end) mam.rk
