Jordan calls for return of Syrian refugees

AMMAN, June 20 (KUNA) -- The Jordanian Government on Sunday called on the international community to carve out a plan to secure return of the Syrian refugees to their home country.
The Jordanian Interior Ministry, in a statement, quoted the Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya as saying number of the refugees in the kingdom exceeds 3.5 million, equivalent to 35 percent of the population, including 1.6 million Syrian refugees with 667,000 of them registered by the UN Higher Commission for Refugees.
The minister warned that many of the refugees would fail to secure housing and food as the international aid agencies "reached the level of exhaustion." No more than 50,000 Syrian refugees have returned to Syria since reopening the borders in October, he said, calling for an international plan to secure return of all of them. (end) ab.rk
