EU announces USD-23-mln humanitarian assistance for 3 N. African countries

BRUSSELS, June 18 (KUNA) -- The European Union Friday announced EUR 20 million (USD 23 million) in humanitarian funding to be provided in Algeria, Egypt and Libya to support the most vulnerable people affected by the region's political and protracted crises.
An EU statement said EUR nine million (USD 10 million) will support the Sahrawi refugees in Algeria with food, nutrition and clean water, while EUR six million (USD seven million) will help extremely vulnerable people in Libya access healthcare, education, shelter.
Also, EUR five million (USD 5.9 million) will help vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers in Egypt access education, as well as help them meet their most basic needs.
Janez Lenarcic, EU Commissioner for Crisis Management commented that: "Millions of refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers but also internally displaced, returnees and host populations are in desperate need of humanitarian aid in North Africa.
"Last year, the COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated the already dire conditions in the region," he added. (end) nk.hb
