Egypt stresses necessity of resuming direct talks between Palestinians, Israelis

CAIRO, June 2 (KUNA) -- Egypt's President Abdelfatah Al-Sisi on Wednesday stressed the necessity of an "immediate action" to resume direct negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis, in light of Egypt's efforts to consolidate a ceasefire reached between the two sides in the wake of the last incidents.
This came during a call conducted between Al-Sisi and head of the European Council Charles Michel during which they discussed some issues of common concern, Egypt's presidential spokesman Bassam Radhi said.
Al-Sisi, at the same time, referred to coordination with international community to launch reconstruction in the Gaza Strip based on the Egyptian initiative in this regard, Radhi added.
Michel expressed the European Union's appreciation to the successful Egyptian efforts headed by Al-Sisi that led to reaching a ceasefire between the Palestinian and Israeli sides and a lull in the besieged Gaza Strip, he said.
On Libya, Radhi pointed to a "consensus" on continuing mutual coordination between Egypt and the EU to support Libya's transitional phase until achieving all gains including holding elections due in December.
This will help restore the state's institutions and drive the mercenaries out of the Libyan territories, Radhi noted.
In addition, Al-Sisi emphasized Egypt's keenness on upgrading relations with the EU as a strategic partner in all fields, according to the spokesman.
Al-Sisi said he is looking forward to boosting cooperation with the EU to launch "real shared relations in political, military and economic relations", Radhi pointed out. (end) rg.mmj.hm
