Japan reports 3,468 new virus cases, total at 618,487

TOKYO, May 6 (KUNA) - Japan reported 3,468 new cases over the last 24 hours, raising the nation's total number to 618,487, the health ministry and local authorities said Thursday.
The country's cumulative death toll rose by 49 to 10,551. Tokyo added 591 new infections, which brought the total cases in the Japanese capital to 143,534. The tallies exclude those who were linked to a virus-hit cruise ship in February 2020.
Amid a recent spike in infections, the government puts Tokyo and three western prefectures under a third state of emergency.
Under the declaration effective till May 11, large commercial facilities, movie theaters and theme parks in the designated areas are requested to close. Restaurants and drinking establishments serving alcohol or karaoke equipment are also asked to shut down. (end) mk.aa
