Dutch parliament labels treatment of Uyghur people in China as "genocide"

BRUSSELS, Feb 25 (KUNA) -- The Dutch parliament on Thursday became the first European parliament to call the Chinese treatment of its Uighur Muslim minority in the north western region of Xinjiang a "genocide." The non-binding motion in the Dutch House of Representatives was adopted by a cross-party majority, Dutch media reported this evening.
"It is unique in Europe: for the first time, an EU Member State has labelled human rights violations against the Uighurs in China as genocide," Dutch NOS TV reported.
It noted that in other EU Member States such as France, Sweden and England there is also a debate on this and a resolution is on the table in Belgium.
It is estimated that more than a million Uighurs have already been in Chinese penal camps where they are employed, it added. (end) nk.ibi
