EU calls for calm in Armenia

BRUSSELS, Feb 25 (KUNA) -- The European Union Thursday appealed for calm in Armenia following reports that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has warned of an "attempted military coup", after the country's armed forces called for his resignation.
"The European Union is following developments in Armenia very closely. We ask all actors for calm and to avoid any rhetoric or actions that could lead to further escalation," lead EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Peter Stano said in a statement.
"Political differences must be resolved peacefully and in strict adherence to the principles and processes of parliamentary democracy," it stressed.
The statement noted that in line with the Armenian Constitution, the armed forces "shall maintain neutrality in political matters and shall be under civilian control". (end) nk.ibi
