TOKYO, Jan 26 (KUNA) -- Japan reported 3,616 new cases of the coronavirus over the last 24 hours as of 4:00 p.m. (0700 GMT) on Tuesday, raising the nation's total number to 370,571, the health ministry and local authorities said.
The country's cumulative death toll rose by 72 to 5,215. Tokyo added 1,026 new infections, topping 1,000 for the first time in three days, which brought the total cases in the Japanese capital to 95,534.
The tallies exclude those who were linked to the virus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship in February.
To contain the spread of the coronavirus, the government has put Tokyo and 10 other prefectures under a second state of emergency, including Kanagawa and Osaka.
Under the declaration running through February 7, residents in 11 prefectures are urged to refrain from nonessential outings after 8:00 p.m. Restaurants and other establishments are also asked to close by 8:00 p.m. (end)
