UK suffers 1,401 virus deaths, over 40,000 cases

LONDON, Jan 22 (KUNA) -- Britain on Friday reported 1,401 coronavirus mortalities and 40,261 more infections in the past 24 hours.
The new figures pushed the death toll and overall infections to 95,981 and 3,583,000 respectively, the British Department of Health and Social Care said in a statement.
The department noted that the number of people who received the first dose of Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccines surpassed 5.4 million.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that it was too early to know whether all measures of lockdown will be lifted in the beginning of next spring.
Johnson's announcement coincided with the proclamation of Northern Ireland's authorities to extend lockdown from mid-February to March 5 because the number of virus-related cases did not reduce.
The measures of the general lockdown in Britain are set to end on February 15, but many experts and politicians called on the government to extend them.
As of last Monday, all passengers heading to Britain must have a document valid up to 72 hours free of coronavirus. (end) kd.mmj.hm
