NEW YORK, Jan 21 (KUNA) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned the deadly double suicide bombing targeting civilians at a market in Baghdad Thursday.
The UN chief expresses his deep condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government and people of Iraq, and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured," reads a statement by Spokesman for the Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric.
"The Secretary-General appeals to the people of Iraq to reject any attempts to spread fear and violence aimed at undermining peace, stability and unity," added the statement.
He calls on the Iraqi government to ensure that those behind these horrific crimes are swiftly identified and brought to justice.
The Secretary-General reiterates the commitment of the United Nations to support the people and Government of Iraq in their efforts to consolidate peace.
Earlier, a twin suicide bombing killed 32 people and wounded 110 at a crowded market in central Baghdad. The attack was the bloodiest in Baghdad since January 2018. (end) asf.ibi
