Senate confirms Avril Haines as director of nat'l intelligence

WASHINGTON, Jan 21 (KUNA) -- The US Senate confirmed Wednesday evening Avril Haines as the next Director of National Intelligence (DNI), being the first in President Joe Biden's Cabinet to be confirmed.
Haines was confirmed with an 84-to-10 vote, becoming the first woman to head the US intelligence community.
On Tuesday, Haines said in her confirmation hearings "to be effective, the DNI must never shy away from speaking truth to power, even, especially, when doing so may be inconvenient or difficult." Meanwhile, Biden swore in White House top aides in a virtual ceremony at the White House.
In remarks, Biden said "we're one team," adding "we have an obligation, but we also have a great privilege. Very few times does an individual get to do something that can fundamentally positively impact other people's lives, not only here but around the world." Biden was sworn in earlier Wednesday as the 46th President of the US. (end) si.aa
