TOKYO, Jan 20 (KUNA) -- Japan reported 5,372 new cases of the coronavirus over the last 24 hours, raising the nation's total number to 343,100, the health ministry and local authorities said on Wednesday.
The country's cumulative death toll rose by 106 to 4,709. Tokyo added 1,274 new infections, topping 1,000 for the eighth straight day, which brought the total cases in the Japanese capital to 89,188.
The tallies exclude those who were linked to the virus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship in February.
آ To contain the spread of the coronavirus, the government has put Tokyo and 10 other prefectures under a second state of emergency, including Kanagawa and Osaka. Under the declaration running through February 7, residents in 11 prefectures are urged to refrain from nonessential outings after 8:00 p.m. Restaurants and other establishments are also asked to close by 8:00 p.m. (end)
