Powerful earthquake kills dozens in Indonesia's Sulawesi

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 (KUNA) -- At least 26 people have died and hundreds more injured after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia's Sulawesi island early Friday, the country's disaster mitigation agency said.
In a statement, the agency stated that thousands of residents fled their homes to seek safety following the quake, which could be felt strongly for five to seven seconds and damaged many houses.
The Indonesian archipelago in Southeast Asia is exposed to frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its location on the Pacific Ocean "Ring of Fire" where tectonic plates collide. (end) aab.aa
