KUWAIT, Dec 30 (KUNA) -- Despite the bleak emotional landscape created by the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), achievements and awards in culture, arts and science maintained their presence in 2020, planting seeds of hope and optimism for the future.
The following are the major achievements and awards for this year:

Feb 10: The South Korean movie Parasite won the top Oscar award, the first non-English-speaking film to win the prestigious award.
May 30: NASA declared manned space mission in May the first time since 2011.
Oct 5: Three scientists -- British Michael Houghton and Americans Charles Rice and Harvey Alter -- won The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2020 for the discovery of new treatment methods for Hepatitis C virus.
Oct 7: Emmanuelle Charpentier of Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens, Berlin, Germany, and Jennifer Doudna of University of California, Berkeley, US, won the 2020 Nobel Prize "for the development of a method for genome editing." Oct 8: The American poet Louise Gluck won the 2020 Nobel Prize for Literature.
Oct 9: The World Food Program (WFP) won the 2020 Nobel Prize for peace.
Oct 12: The 2020 Nobel Prize for Economics was awarded to Paul Milgrom and Robert Wilson from Stanford University for their contributions to auction theory.
Dec 2: China National Space Administration's (CNSA) Chang'e-V successfully landed on the moon, collected samples.
Dec 5: Turkey's President Recep Tayypid Erdogan announced that his country is on a verge of a new age in defense manufacturing with the production of the first Turkish-made helicopter engine. (end) sr.eng
